Medicine – general information

About the study of medicine

Medicine is the study of prevention, detection and treatment of diseases and injuries in humans. Physicians aim to restore and maintain the health of patients.

In medical school, medical employees receive scientific and practical training. For self-employment as a physician after graduation, one still needs specialized training in which one specializes in the respective field of medicine (general medicine, surgery, etc.).

At the beginning of the study program, the curriculum includes subjects such as biology, chemistry, biochemistry, physiology and anatomy, as well as the corresponding mandatory internships. After ten semesters, the last two semesters of study are followed by a so-called practical year (PJ). This is divided into tertials, each of which lasts four months. Two of these tertials are dedicated to the subjects of internal medicine and surgery; for the third tertial, students are free to choose the area in which they prefer to work.

Career options after graduation

Depending on the specialization, a physician may work in different hospital departments (e.g., anesthesiology, orthopedics) or as a resident physician in their own private practice. In addition, one can find employment with ambulance and rescue services, in public health offices, with large companies as a company doctor, in nursing homes for the elderly and in medical research.
