Research in Germany – Booth at Naturejobs Career Expo

Making researchers who are currently working at the US West coast aware of research and career opportunities at FAU – this was the main aim of the Faculty’s participation in the Naturejobs Career Expo in San Francisco on 27th April. The Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Science were part of the “Research in Germany” booth, where a number of German universities showcased opportunities to about 500 junior researchers from all over the world. Neuroscientists, engineers, physicians, biologists and biotechnologists, chemists and physicists visited our booth, showing that Germany keeps being a highly attractive place for researchers. The FAU representatives were able to point out research areas and projects, funding opportunities, and several concrete employment opportunities to the participants.

Panel discussion on the role of high impact publications in scientific careers

On the evening prior to the event, DAAD and the General Consulate of Germany had invited German alumni active in the Bay Area to a panel discussion about “Publications in high impact journals and their role in scientific careers”. Dr. M. Bucci, Senior Editor with Nature Chemical Biology, and the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. J. Schüttler, answered the questions of the audience. The panelists explained how – aside from “hard” factors like impact factors and third-party funding – “soft” factors, such as social competencies, teaching skills, and compatibility with the research strategy of an institution influence appointment decisions. Networking was highlighted as a further crucial success factor in building scientific careers.
